Road Trip to Canberra

A long day on the road. Roughly eight hours driving, plus rest stops, with a GPS that was giving us odd directions, made for a tiring day with few photographs taken.

Proof that we weren't at home:
A magpie in Albury - note the black back, instead of the white that we see at home.

More proof we weren't at home:
"Neapolitan" flavoured milk! It tastes, as you might expect, like melted neapolitan ice-cream. Purchased at Aldi in Albury, not seen anywhere else. But one does wonder why Aldi named their flavoured cow's milk brand after a male sheep?

Final proof we were away:
The obligatory stop at the Dog of the Tuckerbox. The sun was low by that point, and directly behind the dog, so photos were not easy.

We were lucky that daylight saving started yesterday, as it gave us extra daylight driving, and we managed to get to Canberra before peak kangaroo time. The Hume highway is littered with corpses of every type of wildlife. It is horrible to see, and a constant reminder not to drive on country roads from dusk on.

We arrived at our motel just as their kitchen was closing, but fortunately they managed to rustle up a couple of meals and deliver them to our room, so we didn't have to go out again. Phew!

Enjoy your trip to Canberra. I was hoping to be there for Christmas this year but that's not going to happen; too much is due to be happening here.
Kangaroo time in Canberra? My brother has just spent a year and a half in Canberra and "met" a kangaroo at the end of his first week in Australia. To his surprise the bus driver stopped the bus some 10 metres past the stop; he couldn't think why. He then walked back past the stop towards his work and was even more surprised to see a kangaroo sitting in the bus shelter! Obviously to an Australian the reason the driver didn't stop there; you all know how dangerous Kangaroos can be. The rest of the world, on the whole, doesn't.

The kangaroo time sounds like our deer time in the states. It sounds like a great road trip.

Neopolitan icecream, as a child we ate the chocolate first, then the pink, vanilla last. We are experiencing kangaroos near us, don't like driving at dusk.

Nice that the kitchen could prepare a couple of meals for your late arrival! Animals crossing the roads can be so dangerous. When I lived in the US, my car collided with a big deer one time. It caused my car a lot of damage, but the deer ran away.

I am pleased to see magpies respect government boundaries.
The dog on the tucker box has been tarted up a bit from when I last visited. You would have also gone through Holbrook. The submarine there is one of the more surprising roadside attractions along the Hume.
