Happy Summer!

It's not my favourite season of the year, but the upside is that it is time for the first link-up for Bonnie Hunter's "winter" mystery quilt, Grand Illusion.

I don't need another large quilt, so this time I'm making about a quarter of the quantity Bonnie specifies, and I'll see where that leaves me at the end. I've made 25 of this week's units, and 20 extra half-squares for a future step.
This year I'm working with my own (metric) measurements. For the last two mysteries Bonnie's units have finished at 3", so before she released this clue I was contemplating changing her units to 10cm or 12cm squares, so they would be easier to sew and would finish a bit larger. But Bonnie surprised me with this unit, which is 4" square. I've cut and sewn mine so that they finish at 10cm, which means they will be so close to the size of  those worked in inches that no-one will notice the difference. But I'll be happier sewing my normal seam allowance instead of quarter-inches.

I'll add a link to Bonnie's link-up when it goes live later tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's colour choices!

Added later: Here's the link-up!

I admire your use of metric measurments.

You've chosen some great fabrics and got the blocks together super quickly. Well done! I'm sure they are going to turn into a beautiful quilt.

I never thought about the seam being different from metric, WOW if the US ever gets it together and switches over that will be a mess for us quilters here!

We are metric in Canada but only officially, most of us still cook and sew in Imperial measures so doing a quarter inch seam or 4" block doesn't seem odd. Love your pinks, they really pop.

It's looking great! I may follow your approach and do a smaller version as well - it all depends on the next steps... Happy sewing!

I guess as long as the blocks work out with each step, it doesn't really matter. I have a European sewing machine so the seam allowances are in metric, but Canada can pretty much go either way, so I'm bilingual, I guess :) Your piecing looks lovely so far.

Those colors are stunning! I like the hue of the yellow one, because normally I don't like yellow at all!

That is the great thing about making quilts - we can each personalize our quilt to our own taste. Even though so many people are making the same quilt they will all be different, at least a little bit. I like your fabric choices. They are all playing together nicely!
