Bird Attracting

This is protea "Limelight", as seen on the website of Protea World:

Looks good, doesn't it? Small shrub, with lovely flowers that attract birds.

I have one in the garden, which was just developing its first flower. Any day now I was going to post a picture of it looking gorgeous.

Except this morning, this happened:

The culprit? A sulphur-crested cockatoo, doing what cockies like to do:
Chomping stuff! As seen previously chomping daffodils and tulips, and lamb's ears, and more daffodils. Not quite the kind of "bird attracting" I was hoping for!

As a postscript, there was an interesting article yesterday on the ABC website about research into cockie behaviour. A quote from the article: "They're very explorative, very interested in everything, quite destructive, and I can totally see that they like the different textures, and the noise that it makes and just ripping things out," Dr Klump said.

How shocking to find your flower like that!

OMG that would make me cry! Honestly I just planted a protea and it is a normal red one, but I am going to be on the look out for a Limelight now, as this is a stunning flower. Oh those naughty cockies are very dstructive and apart from netting everything, I cannot think how to keep them at bay! My husband plays lawn tennis and they dig up the courts, so the club members resort to letting their dogs chase them off the courts, but it only reduces the damage, as there are more cockies then dog walkers!

We are seeing more and more white cockies around our place, they have scared away the pink galahs, very rarely see them now. Such a shame about your garden.

You have lots of beautiful Blooms at your place.
Yes the Cockatoos are very destructive.. Hundreds visiting our town each year and destroy the Moreton Bay trees that line the street.
Sadly they are also migrating to our area....
