Agile Antechinus

Captured by the wildlife camera earlier this week:

It might look like a rodent, but it is actually a carnivorous marsupial. The agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis) eats insects and spiders. I've never actually seen one, so it is amazing to discover that we have them on our block.

You can see some daytime photos and read about them here.

When I was a teenager Mum spotted one (otherwise we would have thought it a mouse also) eating moths on the kitchen window - climbing up the flywire at night. Such sweet creatures, but shy!

Fantastic sighting. The camera is obviously a really useful tool.

WOW awesome photos!!! Antechinus are my favourite Aussie animal! I still remember listening to a hilarious discussion on Triple J one morning years ago when someone called in to tell the hosts ( Adam Spencer and Will Anderson I think) about how Antechinus’ mate ( neither host had even heard of an antechinus before!) Also love that they have no common name, their scientific/ Latin name is pretty much the same as their common name.

Oh wow - how awesome! Just proves that wildlife habitat is SO important.
All we have is Geckos and are concerned that all the work in the yard is going to affect them.

Cheers Wendy
