Why Branches Fall Down

Lots of trees and branches have come down in our recent wild weather. Here's one we found on a tour of the block this afternoon:
A branch which was growing out to the left from low to the ground has broken off.

When the branch hit the ground, it shattered:

Inside the branch you can see that it has been eaten out by who knows what sort of insects:
No wonder it was lacking in structural integrity!

A couple of weeks ago I had some black beetles in my house. I looked them up on the internet and decided they were some kind of wood boring insect. My neighbour had brought home some old lumber. When ever he was cutting the boards I had those beetles inside my house. They are no longer here. But I think it is because he has finished his cutting.
